Ketamine and Obsesive-Compulsive Disorder
What is OCD?
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition that can affect children, adolescents, and adults. People with OCD experience recurring, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and feel compelled to perform repetitive actions (compulsions) to reduce anxiety or prevent perceived harm.
You may feel driven to repeat the same action every time a triggering thought occurs, which can significantly interfere with daily life and cause emotional distress.
Common obsessions may include:
- Aggressive or intrusive thoughts toward yourself or others
- Fear of germs, dirt, or contamination
Common compulsions may include:
- Excessive cleaning, hand-washing, or bathing
- Arranging or ordering items in a specific way
- Repeatedly checking things, such as locks or appliances
What Causes OCD?
The exact cause of OCD is not fully understood. However, several factors may increase the likelihood of developing the condition, including:
- A family history of OCD
- Exposure to abuse or trauma
- Differences in the brain’s wiring and chemistry
How is OCD treated?
Traditional treatment options for OCD often include therapy and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). While these approaches can be helpful, they do not always address the underlying brain mechanisms that contribute to obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors.
At Lone Star Infusion, our Anesthesiologist/Anesthetist team offers customized ketamine infusion therapy as an innovative and effective option for managing OCD symptoms.
Ketamine works differently from traditional antidepressants by promoting healthy neural connectivity and helping to reset dysregulated brain pathways associated with obsessive-compulsive behaviors.
What to Expect During Ketamine IV Infusion Treatment?
Before beginning treatment, our Anesthesiologist/Anesthetist will conduct a comprehensive consultation to determine whether ketamine infusion therapy is appropriate for you.
Treatment typically begins with a series of six low-dose infusions, each lasting about one hour—with 40 minutes of active infusion and 20 minutes of recovery. During your session, you’ll be continuously monitored to ensure your comfort and safety.
Some patients describe the experience as feeling “floaty” or mildly detached, and you may experience brief visual changes or other mild effects that wear off quickly after the infusion.
Following the initial series, maintenance or booster infusions may be scheduled approximately every 3 to 5 weeks to help sustain the benefits of treatment. The frequency and number of boosters depend on your symptom severity, response to treatment, and other medications you may be taking.
