Ketamine and Anxiety

01

What is Anxiety?

While everyone experiences stress or anxious feelings from time to time, anxiety disorders involve excessive fear or stress about situations that are typically harmless. Anxiety can manifest as extreme or irrational worry about future events, often accompanied by physical tension, avoidance behaviors, or disrupted daily functioning.

There are several types of anxiety disorders. The most common is Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), which is characterized by persistent worries and fears that interfere with everyday life. Symptoms of GAD may include:

  • Muscle tension
  • Feeling on edge
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia

Other common anxiety disorders include panic disorder, social anxiety, and specific phobias.

How is Anxiety Treated?

At Lone Star Infusion, our Anesthesiologist/Anesthetist team uses ketamine IV infusion therapy to treat anxiety. Because anxiety experiences are highly individual, finding the right treatment can be challenging. Traditional anti-anxiety medications often take weeks to build effectiveness as they adjust chemical imbalances in the brain.

Ketamine works differently. Instead of slowly increasing serotonin, ketamine stimulates your brain’s overall functional capacity, providing rapid relief and mental clarity. This can enhance the effectiveness of additional therapies, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), by helping you focus on recognizing and controlling thought patterns and behaviors.

What to Expect During Ketamine IV Therapy for Anxiety?

Before starting treatment, you will have a comprehensive consultation with an Anesthesiologist/Anesthetist to determine if ketamine therapy is appropriate for you.

Treatment usually begins with a series of six low-dose IV infusions, administered once or twice per week. Each session lasts approximately one hour, including:

  • 40 minutes of infusion
  • 20 minutes of recovery

During the infusion, you may feel a relaxed or floating sensation and occasionally mild visual changes or hallucinations, which fade quickly after the session.

Based on your response and symptom severity, your provider may recommend

maintenance infusions every 3–5 weeks to sustain benefits. Over time, the interval between treatments can often be gradually extended.

All sessions are closely monitored to ensure safety and adherence to best practice protocols.
