Ketamine and CRPS/RSD

01

What is CRPS/RSD?

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS), also known as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), is a condition affecting the autonomic and sympathetic nervous systems. It causes constant, intense, and severe pain that is often disproportionate to the original injury.

In addition to pain, CRPS/RSD may cause:

  • Swelling
  • Muscle spasms
  • Changes to your skin color and texture
  • Extreme sensitivity to touch and temperature
  • Insomnia
  • Problems with concentration and memory
  • Disability

There are two types of CRPS :

  • Type I : Occurs after a minor or secondary nerve injury from events such as soft tissue injuries, bone fractures, heart problems, or repetitive strain injuries (e.g., carpal tunnel syndrome).
  • Type II : Involves a definable major nerve injury and requires prompt treatment to avoid chronic pain and debilitation.

At Lone Star Infusion, our Anesthesiologist/Anesthetist team uses ketamine IV infusion therapy to treat chronic pain conditions. Ketamine works with your neurons to improve neural function and reduce neurological pain.

Many patients achieve long-term relief with a combination of an initial infusion series followed by regular booster treatments

What Happens During Ketamine IV Therapy for CRPS/RSD?

Before beginning treatment, you will have a comprehensive consultation with an Anesthesiologist/Anesthetist to determine if ketamine therapy is appropriate.

  • Infusion duration and frequency: Patients often receive one-hour high-dose infusions on an as-needed basis. A common regimen may include one or two treatments every six to eight weeks to manage symptoms. Some patients maintain results with one-hour infusions every eight weeks, typically after several years of therapy.
  • Monitoring and safety: You will be continuously monitored during infusions to ensure safety and effectiveness. Best-practice standards and protocols are followed for every session.

How many infusions will I need?

A series of infusions, followed by maintenance treatments, provides the most effective and lasting relief, with each infusion building on the previous session.

  • For psychiatric symptoms, we often start with a series of six infusions over several weeks, followed by maintenance treatments every 3–5 weeks as needed.
  • For chronic pain conditions, treatment may involve one or more one-hour high-dose infusions, followed by one or two infusions every six to eight weeks for symptom management.

The number and frequency of treatments vary depending on individual needs, symptom severity, and response to therapy. Over time, we work with patients to extend the interval between treatments when possible.
