Ketamine and Neuralgia
What is Neuralgia?
Neuralgia is intense, sharp, burning, or stabbing pain that follows the path of a nerve. This pain can be constant or intermittent and may result from an irritated, injured, or damaged nerve.
- Infection such as shingles
- Pressure on a nerve
- Changes in the function of a nerve
- Chronic kidney disease
- Side effects of cancer medications
Your risk of developing neuralgia increases with age or the presence of other conditions, such as diabetes or multiple sclerosis.
How is Neuralgia treated?
At Lone Star Infusion, our Anesthesiologist/Anesthetist team uses ketamine IV infusion therapy to treat chronic neuropathic pain. Ketamine works by modulating nerve receptors to prevent pain signals from reaching the brain, giving nerve cells in the brain and spine an opportunity to reset and improve function.
Many patients experience long-lasting relief, often maintaining improvements for years with regular booster treatments. Some patients have been able to reduce or stop narcotic medications, while others regain the ability to participate in hobbies, work, and daily life activities.
What to Expect During Ketamine IV Infusion Therapy?
If ketamine infusion therapy is determined to be right for you, your Anesthesiologist/Anesthetist will design a customized treatment plan.
- Treatment duration and frequency: Some patients receive four-hour high-dose infusions initially, followed by one or two infusions every six to eight weeks for symptom management. Others maintain results with one-hour infusions every eight weeks, depending on their response over time.
- Monitoring and safety: You are continuously monitored, and medications are available to manage side effects like nausea. Safety protocols include emergency medications, equipment, and best-practice standards.
- Experience during infusion: Patients may experience mild sensations, but our team takes extra steps to minimize discomfort throughout the procedure.
Based on your response to treatment, additional infusions may be recommended every 8–12 weeks to maintain pain relief and improved neural function.
